WHY & HOW

I sit in my second grade classroom with Mrs. Gonyea. As a class, we gather on the rug and read Nuffle Bunny by Mo Williams. The way she engages us and teaches us with such a small object such as a book. I begin to think, I want to be her. As I traveled through middle school I sat in Mrs. Perham's music class. She was not only my music teacher, but my mentor in life. As I sat with her I listened to all of her educational and life advice and then thought to myself, I want to be her. Then high school came along and they were not my favorite 4 years. I narrowed my four years into 3, by graduating a year early.  I sat through the dreaded global studies with Mrs. Perrigo. Although global studies was not my strongest subject, she embodied what I wanted to be: strong, confident, educated and trusting. I thought again I want to be her. As I now stand in front of a group of young students and embody all of the characteristics of my previous teachers, I hope a student looks at me and thinks, I want to be her. I hope they not only want to be me as a teacher, but I hope they incorporate the dedication in school as I did, as I graduated high school a year early. I hope they engage themselves in activities other than teaching such as I do with baking. I hope they take time to be present with their family and friends. Out of all of these things, I hope I inspire certain students to be a educator and I want to inspire and stand behind them in anything they dream to do.

Kylee Decillis is a substitute teacher in Malone, at Davis Elementary, Flanders Elementary, St. Josephs Elementary, Malone Middle school and Franklin Academy High School. She is currently a certified baby sitter and is a teacher in an after school program through the Plattsburgh City School District called Project CONNECT. This program covers Oak Elementary, Stafford Middle School, Bailey Elementary, and Moment Elementary. She is currently shadowing many elementary educators in the Malone school district.
